Finding money management tips is a hot topic these days. Frugality is making a big comeback in our lives. Home related expenses need to be scrutinized and these tips can make a difference.
Get a home energy audit:-Make corrections where indicated for insulation, windows, roof etc.. this could easily save up to 20% of your energy costs-year after year. Covers the cost of the audit many times over. A favorite money management tip.
Get rid of land lines:-Everyone has a cell phone these days, but if you still want one consider the various VOIP services (i.e Vonage) and get the cheapest plan.
Recycle your bottles and cans:-Take them to the coin machines. Help the environment and your pocket all at once.
Change all light bulbs to energy saving types:-Turn off lights when not in use.
Get a maintenance contract for your boiler and cooling systems:-They will last longer, perform better, saving hundreds in the long run.
Close Chimney flue when not in use.- Keep the drafts out and your money from going up in smoke!
Get a programmable thermostat:-Lower the temperature to 66 degrees when at work or sleeping. It's more comfortable at night and the savings add up.
Buy energy efficient appliances.
Keep up with your car servicing schedule:-It will last longer and need fewer repairs.
Buy a pre-owned car that's at least 2 years old (get a CarFax): -Most of the depreciation on a car is in the first two years.
Buy a green car or at least one that uses regular gas:-The savings add up.
Find and use coupons from the local paper or on line.
Mow your own lawn:-The exercise will keep both you and your wallet in shape.
Shop around and consolidate your insurances (Home,Auto,Umbrella) with one company. Review periodically:-(I recently saved 600/year). Another of my favorite management tips.
Buy Term life insurance, not whole life:-Invest the difference in premium.
Save on disability insurance by increasing the waiting period to six months.(that's why you have an emergency fund!).
Never pay late fees.-Pay your bills on line and set up alerts to remind you of due dates.
Refinance to a fixed rate mortgage.-Interests are at historical lows.
